Travel Lessons Learned the Hard Way

Practice car rides early. Don't wait until your road trip to discover your Pom gets carsick or loses their mind in the car. Start with short drives and build up to longer ones.
Always have a backup plan. Hotels say they're pet-friendly and then aren't. Flights get delayed. Things go wrong. Have phone numbers for nearby vets and backup accommodations ready.
Microchip before you travel. If your Pom gets loose in an unfamiliar place, good luck finding them without a microchip. It's cheap insurance that could save their life.
Bring familiar stuff from home. Their blanket, their toys, their food—familiar smells help them settle in new places. Don't expect them to be fine with all-new everything.
Double-check leashes and collars. New environments make dogs bolt. Check that their collar fits snugly, the leash clip works, and you have a backup. Losing them in a strange city is a nightmare.
Not every dog should travel. If your Pom has severe anxiety or health issues, dragging them on trips might not be kind. Sometimes hiring a good pet sitter is the better move.
