Caring for My Pomeranian Puppy: Personal Insights on Feeding, Bathing, Potty Training, Crating, and Sleep

Yes, my Pomeranian, Sash, was once a puppy. I’ve learnt the hard way with all the challenges of raising these cute bundles of energy. From the right feeding routine to potty training, each aspect of care is crucial for their development and happiness.

Here’s my personal guide on how I managed the essentials of caring for my Pomeranian puppy.

How much should I feed my Pomeranian puppy?

Deciding how much to feed my Pomeranian puppy depends on factors like age, size, and activity level. In the early stages, I feed my puppy high-quality, dry food formulated for small breeds

When she was between 2 to 3 months old, I fed her about ¼ to ½ cup of puppy food, spread over three to four meals throughout the day. As she grew, I gradually increased the amount.

By 6 months, I transitioned her to two meals a day. I always make sure fresh water is available and check with my vet regularly to ensure the diet meet my puppy’s health needs.

How often should I bathe my Pomeranian puppy?

I’ve learned that Pomeranians don’t need frequent baths, so I used to bathe my puppy every 3 to 6 weeks, unless they get particularly dirty. I was careful not to over-bathe, as it can strip their coat of natural oils, leading to dry skin.

I used a gentle, puppy-safe shampoo to ensure she was thoroughly rinsed and dried to prevent matting and skin issues, especially given her thick fur.

When can I start potty training my Pomeranian puppy?

I started potty training as soon as my Pomeranian puppy came home, which was around 8 weeks old. Consistency is absolutely key. I established a regular schedule for feeding and potty breaks, always taking them to the same spot to do their business.

I made sure to praise and reward her immediately after she got potty in the right place. She usually needed to relieve herself upon waking, after meals, and after playtime, so I use those times to encourage good habits.

What kind of crate is best for a Pomeranian puppy?

A crate is indispensable for safety and training. I choose a durable, appropriately sized crate for my puppy—one big enough for her to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably, but not so large that she could use one end as a bathroom.

I opted for a wire crate with an adjustable partition, which could grow with my puppy. Inside, I would place comfortable bedding and a few toys to help her view the crate as a safe and positive space.

How much sleep does a Pomeranian puppy need?

Pomeranian puppies, like mine, require a lot of sleep—about 18-20 hours a day—to support their growth and overall health. I made sure to establish a quiet, comfy sleeping area where my puppy could rest without disturbance. As she matured, her sleep needs have decreased slightly, but she still needs plenty of rest.

How to train a cute little Pomeranian puppy?

Puppy training  was an essential part of raising my Pomeranian. Starting from an early age, I focus on basic commands like ‘sit’, ‘stay’, and ‘come’. Positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, helped make learning enjoyable and effective for her.

Socialization is also a key component; I introduced my puppy to different people, environments, and other animals to boost her confidence and adaptability.

This foundation not only helps in managing behavior but also strengthens the bond between us, ensuring my Pomeranian grows into a well-behaved and sociable adult.

I also did an online dog training course for puppies which was totally excellent.

Conclusion

Raising a Pomeranian puppy has taught me a lot about their specific needs in terms of diet, hygiene, training, and rest. By understanding and addressing these needs, I ensured that my Pomeranian grew into a healthy and well-adjusted dog.

Regular vet visits have been essential, providing tailored advice to suit my puppy’s individual health requirements.
